Salt therapy has been used for centuries across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Salt therapy is enjoying a newfound popularity, both in the US and abroad. Also called halotherapy, it is said to relieve all sorts of medical conditions ranging from respiratory illnesses such as asthma, COPD, and bronchitis to skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It’s also been proven as a treatment for Cystic Fibrosis, suggested for ADHD, weakened immune systems, thyroid disorders and arthritis. Salt chambers, or caves, have been popping up all over the place. These caves offer healing experiences in the most relaxing of environments. With thanks to modern technology today’s salt caves can recreate the same microclimate found in natural salt mines.

At first you wonder if anything’s happening. You’re sitting in an acrylic and wood booth the size of a telephone booth – remember those? – listening to Eastern music with your eyes closed, breathing deeply. It’s a pleasant, relaxing 15 minutes, but you might as well be home on your couch, you think. And then you open your eyes and look down. Bits of finely granulated salt dot your arms and legs and collect in corners of the booth’s floor.
You know how great you feel walking on a beach or sailing in the ocean? Now there’s a local treatment that promises to replicate that sensation. “When you go to the beach and breathe in the salt air, you immediately feel relaxed,” says Gary Patrick of Breathe Easy, a company that makes salt therapy systems. “You get that same feeling in a salt booth. Salt is a natural therapy—it is antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and an antihistamine. It is excellent for people with allergies or sinus infections—and helps everyone breathe better.” Patrick has installed a booth at Yoga Sanctuary in Mamaroneck (951 E Boston Post Rd 914-381-9642; yogasanctuary.net) and is planning additional locations in Dobbs Ferry, Briarcliff Manor, and Katonah.
Think about how you feel after spending a day at the beach. Utterly relaxed, right? Now, there’s a way to reap that same bliss factor—even if you’re nowhere near the coast. It’s called dry salt therapy, or halotherapy, and it’s popping up in cities throughout the U.S. Already a popular spa treatment in Europe (the miners who worked in Polish salt caves sparked the trend back in the 1800s), it involves sitting in a room made of Himalayan salt as microscopic particles of pharmaceutical-grade salt (so, not the kind sitting on your table in a shaker) are circulated into the air. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and breathe, says Gary Patrick, co-founder of Breathe Easy a dry salt therapy treatment center with various locations in New York.
