What is Halotherapy?

Today, more and more people are suffering from respiratory issues. From pollution and smog to airborne diseases, pollens and toxins; never before has our society been faced with such a growing epidemic of respiratory ailments.

Halotherapy (dry salt therapy) has been researched over the past few decades. Studies have shown it to be an alternative treatment for respiratory and skin conditions.

WHAT IS DRY SALT THERAPY (HALOTHERAPY)?

Halotherapy (dry salt therapy) is a natural, drug-free, alternative treatment that may help to improve respiratory issues and skin conditions.

The key process involves a halogenerator crushing and grinding 99.99% Pure Grade Sodium Chloride (salt) into very tiny microparticles. The halogenerator, or halotherapy machine, then disperses these dry aerosol microparticles of salt into the salt therapy room, salt cave, halotherapy sauna, or SALT Booth® during a typical session.

As an individual undergoes a salt therapy session, they inhale the microparticles. The particles penetrate deep into the lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli to address respiratory concerns.

At the same time, the non-inhaled salt particles are absorbed by the body to combat skin conditions. Salt therapy can offer both respiratory (lungs and breathing) and cutaneous (skin-related) benefits. Additionally, the relaxing, calm environment offered by salt room therapy can help with stress reduction.

Most people are familiar with “wet” salt therapy. Whether you’ve put salt in a bath, had a saline solution treatment, used a Nettie pot to clear your nasal passages, or gargled with saltwater, wet salt has its benefits.

Dry salt room therapy is different. The drier the salt, the better.

That is why SALT Chamber’s protocols include heating the salt prior to putting it into the salt chamber. Heat ensures that all moisture is evaporated. When the salt is crushed and ground into microparticles and inhaled, the salt particles can do their best job.

HOW HALOTHERAPY WORKS

Dry pharmaceutical-grade salt is heated, then ground and crushed into very tiny microparticles by a halogenerator (halotherapy generator). These dry aerosol microparticles of salt are then dispersed into the salt room during a typical session.

As the person relaxes in the salt room, the microparticles are inhaled. The particles penetrate deep into the lungs, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. While inside the salt room, the non-inhaled salt particles fall onto the skin, offering additional benefits.

THE BENEFITS OF SALT ROOM THERAPY

Halotherapy benefits adults and children alike, as well as athletes and animals. It is natural and safe and there are no side effects.

A majority of people who visit salt rooms on a regular basis may find relief from a variety of respiratory conditions. These include, among many others:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Common cold
  • Bronchitis
  • COPD
  • Cystic fibrosis

Dry salt therapy is great for people who also have particular skin conditions such as eczema, acne and psoriasis. Salt therapy may also provide help when someone is recovering from cosmetic surgery.

However, one does not need to have any specific conditions to gain benefits from dry salt therapy.

Halotherapy is very beneficial for overall general wellness. It removes toxicity from the respiratory system. People are exposed on a daily basis to pollutants, airborne diseases, bacteria, allergens and other irritating and harmful factors.

Halotherapy is an excellent way to cleanse and detox the lungs. It can also help to invigorate the whole body by supporting increased lung capacity and oxygen intake.

Interested in salt therapy for general respiratory hygiene? Visiting your local salt therapy facility once or twice a week will enhance lung capacity, boost the immune system, reduce stress, and support better sleep.

Many chronic and acute respiratory conditions require increased frequency and consistency of sessions to realize the most benefits. We encourage you to make salt therapy a habit and a regular part of your health and wellness routine.

DISCLAIMER

Halotherapy is recognized as a safe and effective wellness practice for preventive and restorative health care. It is not a medical treatment and does not offer a cure!

Halotherapy is not recommended for people with contagious diseases, fever, open wounds, certain types of lung cancer, severe hypertension, mental disorders, and active tuberculosis. We always recommend that individuals consult with their local physician to determine if salt therapy is the right treatment for their condition.

Pregnant women should consult with their doctor before using halotherapy. Anyone with serious health concerns needs to seek proper medical advice and care before starting a new type of potential treatment. There are many clinical studies and research, along with testimonials from customers, that demonstrate health benefits and efficacy of salt therapy.

Many countries around the world have varying ways they govern and regulate their citizens’ health-related matters. In some countries, halotherapy is covered by a government’s national health care system or by insurance companies.

HOW TO BUILD A SALT ROOM

Salt therapy equipment and concepts that are used in commercial facilities can be brought into the home for personal use as well. This makes dry salt therapy more convenient and accessible. You can visit and use your personal salt room whenever you want to.

SALT Chamber has dozens and dozens of customers who have built their own salt rooms or have brought a SALT Booth® or SALT FX® home Halogenerator and Pop-Up SALT Booth® into their homes for more frequent use and convenience.

Currently, there are only about 3,000 facilities offering halotherapy around the US and Canada. The industry is growing very fast, however. As more awareness about the benefits of dry salt therapy and the business model develops, more facilities will be established.

Many people drive great distances and spend valuable time seeking halotherapy. That makes sense, considering the great results they have received. Specifically, many respiratory conditions require frequent use to gain the best results.

However, this can be inconvenient and costly. In addition, there are some conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, where it is best for people to be isolated for their salt therapy sessions.

These limitations related to using a commercial salt room are part of what makes home salt therapy so attractive. There’s no more worrying about time spent traveling, nor worrying about exposure to other people, in the course of using a salt room at home.

The same principles for building a commercial salt room apply to installing a salt room at home. There are HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) issues to address, as well as ensuring that the salt air doesn’t corrode or damage other aspects of the house or your personal belongings.

Many people chose to plug in a SALT Booth® or add a SALT FX® home Halogenerator and Pop-Up SALT Booth® since it is portable. There’s no building or modification that needs to be done in terms of your HVAC or any other build-out.

Humans are not the only ones that can benefit from halotherapy.

Other land-based breathing animals have a respiratory and lung system similar to that of people.

And, like people, animals are exposed to the same air we breathe. As we’ve explained, it often contains pollutants, pollen, allergens, airborne diseases and more. Animals often experience the same issues, including inflammation, extra mucus, and restrictive breathing.

There are also unique issues that affect the respiratory systems of some of these animals, especially popular pets like dogs and cats.

For example, most of the lower airway conditions in cats are due to non-infectious causes, with inflammatory airway disease associated with allergies or unknown triggers being the most common. Reactive airways result from ongoing irritation.

These reactive airways tend to narrow the airways (bronchoconstriction) and produce excess mucus. That can lead to difficulty breathing, fast breathing, and sometimes, cough and nasal discharge. Feline Lower Airway Disease (FLAD) is an umbrella term to describe the conditions that lead to lung airway pathology.

Horses have a large lung capacity and often have issues with normal mucociliary clearance and, in fact, there are specific guidelines for measuring this excess mucus, especially with thoroughbreds and racehorses. Horses also face extreme skin conditions from being exposed to wind, dirt, mud, and other factors.
